Students follow a STEM-based curriculum incorporating our specialist options Cyber Security and Engineering.
Everyone follows a core curriculum of GCSEs in English, Maths and Science, as well as completing the equivalent of two GCSEs in Engineering and one in our additional specialist area of Cyber Security, plus one option choice. Lessons are delivered predominantly through tutor-led seminars, along with project-based learning and employer expert input.
Students also participate in Sports and Recreation sessions each week, which offer a range of sporting and physical activities. Personal and Professions Development sessions allow students to further extend their understanding of skills and personal qualities in preparation for the world of work and their positive contribution to society.
Our Religious Studies Education is taught through our Global Cultural Learning and tutor program: Global Cultural Learning
OPTIONS SUBJECTS
BTEC Level 2 Esports
This qualification is for learners who want to develop a range of skills within the esports and related industries. The esports industry is a fast-growing global industry and this qualification includes a breadth of transferrable skills that enable learners to experience esports in different areas to aid their progression to employment, directly or via further study.
It focuses on the business around Esports including four coursework units on:
- Esports Games, Teams and Tournaments
- Establishing an Esports Organisation
- Streaming for Esports
- Plan an Esports Event.
There is no exam but this means that students will need to work consistently across the two years of the course.
OCR Cambridge National in Programmable Systems
This course will inspire and equip students with the confidence to use skills that are relevant to the electrical maintenance, installation and repair sector and more widely in different sectors of Engineering. It covers electronic circuits, the components and devices used in electronic and programmable systems, and how to construct and test them. The course has one exam at the end worth 40% of the qualification in the Principles of electronic and programmable systems. There are two pieces of coursework each worth 30%. The one in Year 10 is Making and testing electronic circuits and in Year 11 it is Developing programmable systems where students programme a microcontroller to perform a specified function. The course does involve some maths and hand eye co-ordination and a desire to find out how things work.
GCSE Computer Science (OCR J277)
This is a theory-based subject with some elements of programming. The first year focuses on understanding the components that make up computer systems including how processors work, binary/denary/hexadecimal systems, networks and different types of data. The second year focuses on developing computational thinking and algorithms; this will include flowcharts and pseudocode, trace tables and Boolean logic. Maths skills will be required for this course – no calculators are allowed. The course is assessed by two written exams that make up 100% of the course total.
GCSE Product Design (Design and Technology)
This course will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Product Design including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.
In Year 10 students will undertake a series of design and manufacture projects to develop their designing, practical skills and subject knowledge whilst working with a range of materials and processes, this will be complimented with theory-based lessons which will cover the core and technical principles in greater depth. In Year 11 our students will undertake a Non-Examined Assessment project which will be a design and manufacture project based on a theme, this will count for 50% of their final grade and the remaining 50% will be a two-hour exam in May/June of Year 11.
