Our Year 10 students became mechanical engineers, computer programmers, builders and forklift truck operators during an Amazon Web Services Robotics Workshop, led by the brilliant team at CreativeHUT.
The challenge? To build and program a prototype robot using LEGO Spike kits and code capable of navigating and transporting server racks in a simulated AWS Data Centre.
But the workshop was more than just a STEM activity – it was a lesson in the skills technology can’t replace: teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, resilience and creativity.
“It’s not really a technological task,” said trainer Alex Gatehouse. “It’s about teaching the soft skills that will really stand them in good stead for their next steps.”
It was inspiring to see students so enthused, learning from their mistakes, collaborating outside their usual groups and adding their own creative flair, including smiley lights and animal sounds on their robots!
“It was fun and a good experience, and it showed me about other paths I could take in my future,” said one student participant.
