Student board leaders Aryish, Aarav and Aryn presented their achievements for last year, and their vision for the future this week to all students in a packed assembly. They issued a challenge to all students: get involved and help shape your school.
In the assembly, they talked about what the student board does, and their key successes in the last year, including a trip to Parliament with local MP Heidi Alexander, the gardening project that is now a key part of the Enrichment programme in the school, and sports day, in which the school competed against UTC Oxfordshire students.
This year, the student board has big ambitions. Primarily motivated by a desire to make things better in school and ensure that student’s opinions and ideas are heard by the teachers and school leaders, they want to work on a few key projects:
- Sports day: they have issued a challenge to students at all four UTCs within ALET, our Trust, to have one giant sports day. This would mean many hundreds of students competing against each other in classic sports day challenges including track and field events, and maybe some unusual events as well.
- Establishing their fledgling garden project to attract bees, improve the biodiversity of the school site and bring some much needed colour.
- Relaunch the student newsletter to make sure that every student knows what’s happening in school and how they can get involved.
They are also organising some important workshops, like the sexual harassment workshops before Christmas, and an online safety one in March, called ‘Digital harms in the online world’.
Aarav also has a challenge for the student board itself: to learn to operate in a professional manner, with clear roles and responsibilities, clear actions and accountability for projects and tasks.
