A recent UTC Swindon leaver, Ben Perrigo, has secured a prestigious apprenticeship with a leading engineering consultancy, Method Consulting.
Having successful completed his second month at Method, Ben says:
“So far, the experience has been above and beyond what was expected. There has been an abundance of opportunities for both professional development and social development. Method Consulting also arrange regular after-work sports and social activities which are mostly free or subsidised.”
Discussing the apprenticeship role, Ben said: “as a Junior CAD Technician, I provide drawings for projects which detail and specify information to make communication between clients, contractors and Method easier. I was already interested in the industry, and the working environment at Method seemed very attractive, plus the CAD work had been an interest of mine for a while.”
The opportunity for an apprenticeship came about after a career’s advice session with a UTC teacher. Ben credits UTC Swindon for preparing him for this experience, saying:
“The UTC helped provide the stepping stone between an academic working environment and a professional environment; it certainly helped to lessen the shock of stepping into a job for the first time. UTC provided us with the key working skills and attitudes needed for the workplace and I was able to transfer these skills to my role at Method.”
Ben reports to Senior BIM Manager, Alex Mason, who believes “Ben (as well as the rest of the team who have joined recently from the UTC), are all being given opportunities to develop and hone the skills learnt during their time at the UTC. Ben has proved valuable to our business and the UTC has given him a solid foundation to continue to develop from. I personally started work through a similar path into industry so I’m fully aware that Ben has great opportunities ahead of him and we look forward to seeing his career develop.”
Looking ahead, Ben plans to progress his career by strengthening his knowledge within the industry and becoming more involved with the whole M&E design process.
