Former student Joyston secures degree apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce

Joyston Fernandes is harbouring big plans for a career in Aerospace Engineering. After leaving UCT Swindon, he landed a fab Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprentice at Rolls-Royce in Bristol.

He says he was attracted to UTC Swindon for its ‘great range of engineering facilities and professional engineering equipment within its workshop’.

“UTC Swindon offers a wide range of support to students and individual learning facilities,” says Joyston, who knew early on he wanted to study engineering.

“Being there since year 10, I particularly enjoyed engineering and maths, hence why I chose them for A Levels,” he said

“I think the BTEC Level 3 engineering and maths A Level is something I would recommend to students who want to pursue an engineering career as they allow you to get a head start from other students outside UTC to the theory and practical aspects within engineering. I really enjoyed the practical side in the course where we got to work with pneumatic systems, hydraulics, electronics and machining. Engagements with the teachers stood out too, as they were really supportive.”

Joyston’s time at UTCS prepared him well for the world of work, he said. “I think it has done an amazing job as it built up my portfolio with work experience during my course, which many other schools did not offer.

“The courses were also great at exposing us to new engineering skills such as operating CAD softwares like Solidswork and workshop skills within the industry – using lathes, drills and other engineering equipment.

With regular careers and apprenticeship updates, Joyston felt well prepared in going to on to his next destination. “There were regular updates on different types of apprenticeships and there were also many career events where you got a chance to speak with other companies,” he said.

“For anyone considering studying at a UTC, he has this to say: “It is definitely the place to be whether or not you are pursuing engineering.”
