Apprentice flying high with RAF

Former student Nathan Plenderleith is an apprentice Aircraft Technician – Mechanical at RAF Cosford. He is studying a Level 3 Aeronautical Engineering Diploma

“The reason I chose this apprenticeship is because it gave me the opportunity to explore the world and develop new skills in areas that I never previously thought of. The reason I chose to join a military apprenticeship is because of my family history in the military and being able earn while I learnt.

” I’m based currently at RAF Cosford which is near Albrighton. Once I’ve completed my apprenticeship I hope to get promoted up the ranks and be sent to a frontline base to work on operational aircraft.”

Nathan was lucky – he only applied for one apprenticeship as he was set on the RAF, which he was offered. He said: “When I got to the interview process they asked some general questions about the RAF then they asked why did I want to join, as well as what previous work experience I had. I think my skills from working in the workshop at UTC gave me an edge.

“The best thing about my apprenticeship is the opportunity to travel the world and learn and earn at the same time. I would definitely say that I become more mature and organised as a person.”

“If you want to join any of the military apprenticeships then do as it’s the best thing you can do I think. I’d also recommend UTC Swindon to anyone.”
