Since September, teams from across UTC Swindon, UTC Reading, City of Oxford College and Reading College have been taking part in the inter-college REME challenge, working on projects faced by REME engineers on a daily basis.
The final showcased the teams’ design, innovation and craftsman abilities, with teams presenting their projects to a group of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers’ (REME) dignitaries.
After careful consideration, students from Reading College and City of Oxford College came away as the final winners, however UTC Swindon student, Lauryn Bailey, hit the spotlight when her hydraulic step idea was noticed by REME, and will now be adopted by them! This is a fantastic achievement – well done Lauryn.
This project has been tailored to link closely to the students’ learning programmes which are rooted in STEM subjects. During the challenge, the project teams have been able to acquire and develop a range of skills and competencies including creativity, innovation, problem solving and communication, and engineering a solution to a given REME problem.
“It was a very enjoyable, exciting and different experience. Working close with the REME since September 2017 has given me a different view of the REME itself as an occupation.”
UTC Swindon KS5 and Literacy Coordinator, Natalie Curtis said:
“This has been a really valuable opportunity for our students – they have had the chance to get to grips with genuine real-world engineering problems, as well as getting a behind the scenes look at how the REME operates. The students have gone above and beyond expectations in their work – their enthusiasm and effort have been exceptional.’
