Year 10 students get a flavour of university life at Oxford Brookes University

On Tuesday 4 February, Year 10 students went on a trip to visit Oxford Brookes University to discover more about university life and potential pathways after leaving UTC Swindon.

Students Henry and Ethan tell us their experience of the trip:

“It was really good to get an insight into the range of courses you can study at university and where they can take you. We were quite surprised at just how many different routes are offered.

“The student ambassadors took us on tours of the campus to show us all of the different facilities and talked to us about their experience of university life. We then sat in on a presentation where they spoke to us about practical matters such as managing student loans.

“Next, we got into small groups and were tasked with delivering a presentation back to everyone about a university society of our choosing. The activity focused on developing our presentation skills, our thinking behind it and how we engaged with the audience.

Ethan, who is currently studying for his GCSEs, has plans to join the Army after finishing his studies at UTC Swindon and said: “This trip was really useful to get more information on the university route but at the moment I am still hoping to go into the Army. In November, I am doing work experience with the military so am hoping to learn a lot from that.”

Henry, on the other hand, is considering the university route and said: “I am keeping my options open at this stage but I like the idea of studying English at university. I am also really interested in web design, so something that encompasses both would be good. On the trip, I was able to speak to students who are studying these courses and was able to get a lot of information on it, so it was very useful.”

Thank you to Oxford Brookes University for enabling our students to get a flavour of university life. We look forward to our next visit.
