On Thursday 23 November, twenty-four leading industry employers and educational providers attended UTC Swindon’s Careers Convention.

Throughout the day, a variety of talks were given to students; discussing areas such as CV writing, apprenticeship applications and interview skills.

In the afternoon, Year 11 and 13 students had the chance to tour around the employer and education provider stands, finding out more about what each company does and what they have to offer students for post 16 and 18. The convention was then opened to the public from 4pm.

The list of leading industry employers and educational providers exhibiting at the convention was vast, with stands from Royal Navy, Patheon, Oxford Brookes University, University of Bristol, University of Winchester, Network Rail, University of Reading, Dialog Semiconductor, Nationwide, British Army, Kwik Fit, GWP, UWE Bristol, BMW, Wiltshire Police, UTC Swindon, Renault Sports racing, Bucks New University, Cadcoe, Royal Mail, Swindon College, IET and Honda.

James Goodchild, an ex-UTC Swindon student attended the event, manning the BMW stand as their new Toolmaster Apprentice. He spoke about his journey so far:

“I joined the UTC last year after I finished my GCSEs, studying the Engineering BTEC Level 3 course. I chose this as I really wanted to go into engineering. I enjoyed my time at the UTC; I liked the environment, you feel at ease talking to people here. It really helped me to grow my confidence. I’m now really enjoying my first year at BMW, studying for my ELA qualification and EUC.”

Two current Year 11 students at UTC Swindon, Bradley Dennis Drinkwater and Llewellyn Clifford Jones commented on the event saying,

“Today has been very helpful as it’s a great way to start us thinking about our futures and opens our eyes to opportunities that we might not have thought of before. Equally, if you already know what you want to do, the employers can give you more information. It also helps us to know what the companies do and the variety of companies there are within engineering”.

The day was a great success with students and employers alike commenting on how beneficial it was. Thank you to all of the employers for coming along and exhibiting.
