Sol singles out supportive and specialist teaching at the UTC

“I thought about studying at the UTC because most of my friends had applied to join and the fact they offered triple science really appealed to me.”

Year 12 student, Sol, joined UTC Swindon in Year 10 to follow his passion for science. We spoke with him to hear about his UTC experience so far…

“I came along to a few open events and taster sessions and had a good feel for what studying at the college would be like. My previous school had given me a lot of options so it was a tough choice, but I’m so pleased I made the move.”

“The whole school is so supportive; it’s like having one-to-one tutoring. Because the college is smaller in class sizes, teachers have more time with each student, and you just don’t get that anywhere else.”

“The teaching is great here. I spend a lot of time with Assistant Principal, Nick, and when you are in his lesson, you learn without even realising you are. He has an ability to get through to each and every student and understand how to get the best out of them.”

“There is also a level of respect with teachers and students. It feels far more like being at work than school.”

“As well as studying, I help out in the science lab and set up some of the experiments for teachers. Science has always been my passion and even in my free time, I am watching science videos on YouTube!”

“Another big perk at the UTC is the amount of opportunities you get. We have employer partners that come in to visit us and just watch the students, to see who could be a good fit in their business. There’s been so many opportunities for apprenticeships and work placements.”

“After UTC Swindon, I plan to go off to university to study chemical engineering, but first I will be studying for my Level three BTEC engineering and Chemistry A-level.”

We wish Sol the best of luck with the rest of his studies at the UTC and for a bright future.
