Swindon Carers Centre’s Ann Giles met the Principal Jon Oliver and Assistant Principal Hollie Danby to hand over the award.

Principal Jon Oliver and Assistant Principal Hollie Danby were proud to pick up UTC Swindon’s Young Carer Champion Award at a ceremony held on Friday June 18.

The Young Carer Award is a lottery-funded project run by Swindon Carers Centre, a charitable organisation, which works in partnership with schools and colleges across Swindon.

To be eligible for the award, the school had to comply with a set of standards to support its young carers, including advertising young carer events, supporting the charity, organising events and talks, and pastoral care.

Hollie Danby, who is also young carer lead at the school, explains some of the ways the UTC supports its young carers: “It’s about being supportive of things like students being late into school because of their caring duties, making sure that student has everything they need in school, extra support in class and exams and counselling sessions for those that need it.”

She goes on: “This award is in recognition of the help we offer these remarkable young carers, but it’s also in recognition of them, all the amazing young carers we have in our school. You wouldn’t spot them in a crowd and no one has any idea how hard they have to work.

“We are incredibly proud of them.”
