From September 2020, UTC Swindon will be offering sixth form students the chance to study BTEC Esports.

The University Technical College (UTC) specialising in engineering and digital technologies wanted to include this new Level 3 BTEC Esports course to complement their current digital technology offerings.

The course covers an introduction to Esports and its roots in competitive online gaming, as well as focusing on aspects of the industry including enterprise and entrepreneurship, skills, strategiesanalysis and health and wellbeing and fitness for players.

Esports has grown year on year into a billion-dollar industry with events watched online and attended by millions of viewers, with Esports events and competitions becoming more viable in times of social distancing. Formula 1 and Nascar transitioning into online racing leagues over the recent months. These new Esports events join prestigious events such as Valve’s Counter Strike Global Offensive Major, the Dota 2 International, Blizzard’s Overwatch World Cup and Riot Games’ League of Legends World Championship.

The addition of this course demonstrates UTC Swindon’s efforts to adapt to the changing landscape and new industry opportunities.
